Guidelines for Membership in the American College of Apothecaries

According to the Constitution and By-Laws of the American College of Apothecaries, members must meet the following membership qualifications:

Qualifications for Full Fellowship Members (Pharmacists)

A.   All Fellows must be licensed pharmacists.

B.   All applicants for Full Fellowship shall be elected to the College.

C.   All Fellowships shall be for one year except for permanent Full Fellowships.
      See Section E.

D.   An applicant for Full Fellowship may be:

1.  
Apply  a licensed pharmacist, working in a community pharmacy, meeting
                  ACA Practice Standards

     Apply  be a licensed pharmacist practicing in an accredited hospital

     Apply  be a licensed pharmacist serving on the faculty of an accredited School or                         College of Pharmacy

     Apply  be a licensed pharmacist holding an executive position with a pharmaceutical 
                 association, state board of pharmacy, or company that supports the
                 healthcare market

     Apply  recommended by three or more current Fellows in good standing with the
                 College.

    2. The pharmacy must meet all requirements for accreditation by the College and
        his/her application will be submitted by the Regional Director after the pharmacy
        has been inspected by a Full Fellow.

    3. A Nominee Fellow has complied with all requirements for Full Fellowship and
        awaiting personal interview and/or changes in the pharmacy for accreditation by
        the College. 

    4. Requirements for Accreditation of a Pharmacy.

        a. Exterior and interior must be clean and well lighted, with merchandise neatly
            displayed.

        b. Patient profile records shall be maintained.

        c. Alcoholic beverages are not to be offered for sale in the pharmacy.

        d. Meal service for consumption shall not be offered in the pharmacy.

        e. Tobacco, ice cream, and beverages are not to be advertised or actively displayed.

        f. Prescriptions are to be packaged only in new containers.

        g. In addition to stocking antidotes for common poisons, the pharmacy will have
            clearly posted the telephone number of the nearest Poison Control Center. Each
            pharmacist will avail himself/herself of the information and services of the
            Center.

        h. A library of references and current materials will be readily accessible.

E.   Permanent Full Fellowship: Full Fellows may retain membership permanently, subject
      to annual review by the Judicial Council, upon payment of dues, regardless of
      occupational status, after attending five annual meetings as a Full Fellow, and/or
      upon retiring as a practicing pharmacist. 

F.   An applicant for Emeritus Fellowship no longer practices pharmacy and, has been a
      Fellow for five years, and petitions the Board for Emeritus Status stating the reasons
      for continuing Fellowship, his or her status in the health professions and areas in
      which he or she intends to serve the College.  An Emeritus Fellow receives only
      the ACA Newsletter.

Qualifications for Membership (Non-Pharmacists)

Apply   Affiliate Membership is open to those individuals who are not pharmacists who
             support the mission of the College.    

Apply   Student Membership shall be open to those individuals who are currently
             enrolled in an accredited School or College of Pharmacy.    

Apply   Corporate Membership is open to any business entity that supports the mission
             of the College, and wishes to work with the College to help achieve that mission.
