ACA Announces D.C. Huffman's Retirement

ANNOUNCES D.C. HUFFMAN’S RETIREMENT

           

The American College of Apothecaries announces that D.C. Huffman and his wife, Judy, will retire after more than 38 years of service to the College.  Dr. Huffman has served the College as Executive Vice President since October, 1971, and Judy began to fulfill her ACA responsibilities shortly thereafter.  Dr. Huffman has also served as Executive Vice President for the American College of Veterinary Pharmacists for the past 13 years.  A retirement celebration has been planned for September 25, 2010, during ACA’s 70th Annual Conference at the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Virginia.

 

During the past several years, Dr. Huffman concurrently served for 10 years as Senior Vice President for Pharmacy Practice and Management Services for the National Community Pharmacists Association, during which time he established the NCPA Management Institute.  Also, he served as the Executive Director of the NCPA Foundation and developed many of the programs the Foundation offers pharmacy students throughout the United States.  Prior to that, he served concurrently as Professor of Pharmacy Administration for 20 years at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy, including 17 years as department chairman and 4 years as the Administration Vice Chancellor for the Health Science Center campus.

 

In 1977, Dr. Huffman was instrumental in the establishment of the Joint Commission of Pharmacy Practitioners, with ACA serving as the secretary for this group for 30 years.  In addition, he assisted with the establishment of the Council on Credentialing in Pharmacy and the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Boards, with ACA serving as members of the Board of Directors for both organizations.  Dr. Huffman has also served on a number of other national groups, coalitions, advisory boards and forums dedicated to serving the pharmacy profession. 

 

The major focus for the ACA during his tenure has been to develop innovative educational programs and during 2010, the College is offering over 250 hours of didactic and laboratory based educational programming for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.  Also, Dr. Huffman conducted a number of research projects to strengthen the economic and professional practice areas of independent pharmacy practice. 

 

During his career as a pharmacist, educator and association executive, Dr. Huffman has received a number of honors and awards, including an Honorary Life Membership in the Arkansas Pharmacists Association, Alumnus of the Year from the University of Mississippi, NCPA’s John W. Dargavel Medal, and ACA’s J. Leon Lascoff Memorial Award.  Also, he is listed in Outstanding Educators of America, Who’s Who in Health Care and Who’s Who in America.  He is an AFPE Fellow, NDEA Fellow, a member of Rho Chi, and belongs to a number of other professional and scientific organizations striving to improve health care.

 

The Huffmans plan to spend more time with family and friends, service for their church and recreational travel.  Dr. Huffman will continue to serve on the Board of Directors for the American College of Apothecaries Research and Education Foundation and assist individual ACA Fellows and other pharmacists enhance their pharmacy practices and, when appropriate, transition their practices from the current owner to young pharmacists seeking entrepreneurial opportunities.
