Basic Veterinary Compounding
Basic Veterinary Compounding is a 14 hour course. This course is designed to introduce participants to veterinary pharmacy compounding. This program provides the fundamental techniques for compounding medications for animals, as well as establishing and marketing a veterinary pharmacy practice.
Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
· Differentiate between food and companion animals
· Describe how a pharmacist could be perceived by a veterinarian to be a competitor
· Identify flavoring options for various animal species and compounded preparations
· Demonstrate knowledge of regulatory requirements and professional standards that affect veterinary compounding
· Cite examples of drugs that are contraindicated or must be used with caution in specific animal species
· Demonstrate the ability to perform calculations necessary to compound veterinary preparations
· Identify equipment and supplies commonly required to compound veterinary preparations
· Discuss how to prepare a patient education leaflet for a veterinary patient
· Discuss the use of PLO gels in veterinary compounding
· Demonstrate the ability to compound a variety of veterinary preparations
· Identify information resources that would be useful to a pharmacist compounding veterinary preparations
· Demonstrate knowledge of animal diseases where a compounding pharmacist can impact animal medication compliance
