Contemporary Prescription Compounding Course
Contemporary Prescription Compounding is a 16 hour course. The overall goal of this program is to provide the pharmacist who has minimal or no experience in contemporary prescription compounding with a theoretical and practical basis on which to build a successful non-sterile prescription compounding practice that complies with Good Compounding Practices (GCPs) espoused by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy and which leads to enhanced pharmaceutical care.
Upon completion of this program, the participant should be able to:
· perform basic pharmaceutical calculations required to accurately compound various non-sterile dosage forms
· describe and differentiate “compounding” and “manufacturing”
· discuss the appropriateness of compounding drug products that are available commercially
· describe and discuss the records that compounding pharmacists are required to maintain
· differentiate the labeling requirements for compounded drug products and dietary supplements
· accurately and appropriately use an electronic prescription balance
· compound these dosage forms using acceptable techniques:
▪ solutions ▪ troches ▪ lip balms ▪ topical creams ▪ PLO gels
▪ Carbopol™ gels ▪ oral suspensions ▪ capsules ▪ suppositories
